When I first bought a Macbook, back in 2012, a lab mate helped me get all set up for research and school work. (Thanks Cameron!) So when a few days ago a friend also switched to a Mac (from Windows and Ubuntu), and expressed some frustration at how things work in OS X, I decided to "pay it forward" and help him out.
Instead of writing a long email with short lifespan, I decided to write a guide instead. I did so in Evernote and I embedded the note below. As I improve and extend the guide, this embedded note will also be updated automatically. I've also added some screenshots from my Mac that demonstrate a few of the suggestions I make in the guide. By the way, this guide is not meant for the casual user! It's motivated by the needs of (STEM) students, researchers, and professionals. I'm also assuming a certain level of familiarity with computers and software; for example, that you know your way around the command line.
